3DCP: 3RS/ Initial Ideas

Image
As a designer I had to consider different approaches I could take in creating something that meets people’s needs and requirements, but is also creative and original. Sketching enabled me to conceptualize my ideas quickly. My first idea was a water dispenser, which is a machine used to cool and pump water. It had a similar aesthetic and shape as my original product (Tupperware). However, it was very basic therefore decided not to develop it. I then started to consider what we lacked in our environment ,as I wanted a design that solved problems for us. Which lead to me designing a greenhouse as similar to a plastic container, it is transparent.  This idea was a skyscraper, which is a tall structure. I figured that by overlapping my containers it would give the impression of many floors, whilst by sticking some on the side it would look like balcony’s. However, this lacked excitement and imagination so once again wasn’t developed but instead used as a starting point. ...

3DCP: 3RS/ Research/ Function

Image
Upon being given my 3D object ( a Tupperware container) I decided to carry out appropriate research to greater my understanding of its function and the materials properties. Tupperware containers are used to store food or goods. Which lead to me questioning if this is a possible health concern, as these containers that come into contact with what we eat could possibly leach chemicals into food. However, from my research I understood high-density polyethylene( the plastic used for most Tupperware products) is safe and non-toxic. Therefore, doesn’t release any harmful chemicals to food of liquid content. It is also a micro-wave safe product, allowing consumers to heat up food. These containers also environmentally friendly as they are designed for long term use.

3DCP: Measuring Ravensbourne/ Final Outcome/ Presentation Sheet

Image
Presentation Sheet 1: Process/ Ideas Presentation Sheet 2: Outcome For my final outcome I designed and created a large-scale 3 dimensional foam board room. In which I carefully considered the colour scheme, measurements, details and furniture. It was a learning process for me as I hadn’t previously used foam board before, enabling me to acquire new knowledge, skills and preferences.Overall, I am pleased with my outcome as it had a warm and welcoming feeling due to its rich hues and neutral colours. Arranging my process and final outcome on two presentation sheets was an effective visual communication tool, which showed my potential client my creative process. Ensuring that my presentation was engaging with a meaning was vital ;as it needed to be powerful. After all, the quality of a presentation will often determine whether a customer buys from me or one of my competitors.

3DCP: Measuring Ravennsbuourne/ 3D Model/ Google Sketch-Up

Image
Architects and Interior Designers often rely on 3D modelling to aid their projects, as this enables them to push their ideas closer to reality. Its a quick process, which enables these professionals to reduce inaccuracy and give them the advantage of making any improvements or corrections. I decided to work in a similar manor and generate my ideas in 3D forms both digitally and by hand. My google sketch up (a 3D modelling computer program) model was a concept study. It was more satisfying than viewing a 2D drawing and enabled me to navigate within the space to get an understanding of how it could be used.  Overall, it helped me study, visual and understand the space. Whereas, my presentation model was made from foam board. I created my design directly onto the material considering measurements and aesthetics and cut it relatively quickly with scalpel and a metal ruler. It was easy to re-model and enabled me to see the impact on the overall design when minor and major changes we...

3DCP: Measuring Ravensbourne/ DECOIST Research

Image
Inspiration:  Soothing details such as peaceful artwork that celebrates nature. Inspiration:An inviting and happy room to relax. Surrounded by fresh air, beautiful greenery and the sounds of nature. https://www.decoist.com/2014-03-31/interior-design-solutions-relaxing-rooms/ The most important thing I had to consider when planning my room design , is how that space was going to be used. Since I was redesigning a room in a University with 2,190 students, I figured I wanted to design a welcoming room for people to relax, socialize and unwind from everyday stress. It was important for me to carefully consider furniture, colour scheme, practicality ,mood and atmosphere. All which would contribute to making a restful space. Colour : I deci de that Green was going to be incorporated within my design,as its the colour of life ,nature and harmony . It is often associated with plants. Having a glorious view of nature from floor 3 was impossible. Overall, it has a calming effect by...

3DCP: Measuring Ravensbourne /Floor Plan

Image
Measuring Tape Measurement is an important element in every phase of building; this includes the planning stages. Therefore, it was essential for me to accurately record the measurements found in my chosen space (quiet room-locate on floor 3). To do this, I used a standard measuring tape to give me precise measurements, that were corresponding to the my drawings of the room. From this I was able to create my floor plan using scale and maths. It was a drawing showing the layout of the room, from above. Including the walls, windows and door. I decided not to include measurements of furniture or appliances as it served no purpose and would have been unnecessary. It became clear that floor planning is an important marketing tool, as prospective buyers want to know the configuration of any room. Accuracy was essential as a good floor could increase the overall enjoyment of the home by creating a nice flow between the space.

3DCP: Final Outcome/Presentation/ Feedback

Image
For my final outcome I decided to create a unique, simple and exciting light shade. Heavily influenced by symmetrical shapes and geometric patterns. Whilst incorporating the idea of repeated lines. Overall, I am pleased with my outcome and feel as though it makes a statement without destroying a carefully thought interior. Having presented my work to a group of students and a tutor I was able to receive some valuable feedback, which would enable me to push my work further and my overall customer exprience.

3DCP: fixtures & Fittings/ Material research

Image
Prior to creating any object its important to consider the basic factors such as the design, budget and quality attributes . Evaluating the needs and goals of the product is also vital before committing to a particular material ;with each one having pros and cons. I knew that there are so many different types of materials out there which are used in creating light shades, making it difficult for me choose. I became fascinated in the idea of having a unique compositions. Therefore, decided that my structural design for my light shade will consist of 0.5mm flat polypropylene plastic. Its transparency enables a reasonable diffusion of light to emit through. It is also cheap and has a high heat resistance meaning, it can easily transfer light without getting damaged or melting. But most importantly, it is easy to cut/shape ,as I wanted my design to be made up slots that fit into each other. This would enable it to be flat packed light shade that my customer can easily put together. ...

3DCP: Fixtures & Fittings/Lamp Shade Desginer Research

Image
Lampshades serve as a work of art on their own with numerous designs, shapes, colours and lighting abilities. With all the lamp shade designers today it is impossible to not find the perfect finishing piece to match your interior. LULL: A lamp shade which automatically opens and closes depending on the time, similar to a flower. The light intensity gradually increases during early hours. It is an award winning light made for 'GiForm 2007'(a design competition in Norway). Charles Trevelyan: Inspired by the 'Titanic' movie and the concept of sinking below the surface.  The leaning lamp creates an illusion and throws a wash of light in any interior.  Thyra Hilden & Pio Diaz: A chandler that takes you into the forest. The shadows engulf the room and transform the walls into unruly shadows of branches, bushes and gnarled trees.

3DCP: Fixtures & Fixings/ Inital sketches

Image
Although there has been a rise of numerous gadgets for photo manipulation, illustration and 3D modelling. Sketching has always been and will continue to remain an important part of the design process. Conceptualizing my idea on paper has always been useful when building towards my next successful design work. It is fast, easy and can be done anywhere. For example the sketches below which I completed on my trip to brick lane, as I needed a method to record the lamp shades which I had been captured by and any other notable ideas on the go. From these initial sketches I was able to create a visual exploration of ideas, as one sketch lead to another. Therefore, there wasn’t a limit of ideas instead there was a clear exploration of multiple options. This was also an effective visual communication tool, which showed my potential client my creative process which writing alone couldn’t do.

3DCP:Fixtures & Fittings/ Trip

Image
As a starting point for my 'fixtures and fixings' project I decided to carry out some research, as this would enable me to build knowledge and equip myself with the information needed to make informed decisions when creating my outcome. As part of my research I went to Camden to capture a series of photographs appropriate to my subject choice, that I could potentially use as inspiration. I became fascinated with the huge selection of lamp shades and decided to make this my area of focus. From this I discovered the importance a lamp shade has on enhancing the mood and decor of the room. Each one has been carefully designed to fit the place and occasion, complement without overwhelming, and draw just enough attention to be noticed. Whilst, exploring the area I noticed that sometimes it's the interesting things that we overlook. We barely even notice the 'wow' factor in which all of us live our lives in. Below are just a few examples:
