FMP: Week Three

Following the crit and advice from the previous week , I was able to identify ways in which I could maximise my project/ research. It was highlighted from my peers that since I was designing a museum aimed at locals from the community, I should communicate directly with them via a questionnaire as this will give me an insight of what is expected and understand the needs of my target audience. I decided to listen to what my peers and tutor said and made the questionnaire.
I made the decision to have only closed questions (questions with a single response) only because this will enable me to quickly hear from a larger amount of people in a shorter amount of time. Some of questions were "is an art museum necessary in the Newham Borough?" which would clarify if I should even design one, whilst others were more about preferred aesthetics such as "would you prefer a neutral colour palette or colourful colour palette?" which would allowed me to understand favoured opinions. Once I received answers I would score it on my paper so that I can obtain overall results of the opinions of respondents.
The people I questioned were locals from the community that were willing to participate in my research, from all ages and genders as my target audience was not a specific age or gender but instead local families/ those from lower incomes.

I then began my creative process, in which I drew some initial shapes that could possibly serve as inspiration for my later design. For this I used different lines and patterns that worked for me and I found captivating, some from observed objects that I found around me others from my imagination. The aim of this task was to get an understanding of what could work as a larger structure. Overall conceptualizing my idea on paper was an important part of the design process and was easy, fast and could be done anywhere. Sketching enabled me to constantly developed my ideas and work back into them if I felt that they lacked interest. I also noticed that one shape would lead to another, showing an exploration of ideas.

During this week I also began creating rough 3D card models (physical models)by hand ,the process required me to fold single white card to create new forms that could serve as inspiration for my building, it was easy to manipulate the material and enabled me to see the impact on the overall design when minor and major changes were made. None of my designs were complex or designed to serve as finished products, instead this was only a starting point that could feed into my imagination and creation. Therefore, I didn't consider measurements or scale.
Overall, this helped me study ,visualise and understand different designs and was relatively cheap.

WWW: This week I was able to complete not only my personal task but those which were suggested by my peers and tutor, this included carrying out a questionnaire to gain an understanding of what expectations must be met ,which will later need me to adapt my designs to meet the requirements that were included in my findings- similar to real life project.

EBI : To push my work further, I could have made the made some changes to my questionnaire for example ensuring that my questions were opened-ended, although this may have been more time consuming it would have resulted to more developed answers.

CRIT: The main criticism I gained was to start developing my sketches and choosing a particular shape that could influence my final outcome. Time management was something I had to consider, as the quicker I started developing my sketches the more time I would have to focus on my final outcome, overall good time management would enable me to accomplish more in a shorter period of time.
